Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We begin with rugby: World Rugby’s council will vote on the proposal for a 20-minute red card next month. The rule was tested in the recent Rugby Championship which South Africa won, as well as other tournaments. The governing body will also consider other rule changes, such as enhanced protection for scrumhalfs, and proposals to speed up the game with 30-second scrum and lineout put-in limits. World Rugby will also consider the rule that lineouts may continue if the ball is not thrown in straight but the opposition does jump.
More rugby news: The Sharks will once again take continuity into their United Rugby Championship clash with Benetton at Stadio Monigo on Saturday afternoon. Head coach John Plumtree has made minimal changes, all three rotational, with Trevor Nyakane at loosehead prop and Fez Mbatha starting at hooker in place of Ntuthuko Mchunu and Dylan Richardson, respectively, while Phepsi Buthelezi and Emmanuel Tshituka swap jerseys this week. The backline remains intact. Saturday’s match in the northern Italian town of Treviso kicks off at 4pm.
# Cricket: India recorded their biggest win at a Women’s T20 World Cup as they thumped Sri Lanka by 82 runs to knock them out of the tournament. Opener Smriti Mandhana and captain Harmanpreet Kaur struck half-centuries as India posted 172 for three, the highest team total of the tournament so far. Sri Lanka was then dismissed for 90, joining Scotland as the second team to crash out of the World Cup. India will face defending champions Australia next as they seek to make the semifinals.
# Tennis: The end of an era will be reached at Wimbledon next year when all 300 line judges will be replaced with an electronic system after 147 years. The All England Club has confirmed all 18 match courts will be fitted with automated electronic line calling, known as ELC. This is the same system used at the US Open in New York since 2020. It is expected that Wimbledon’s Hawk-Eye challenge system which players used to challenge line judges’ calls, will be phased out.
Meanwhile, former world number seven Richard Gasquet has announced he will retire after the French Open next year. The 38-year-old Frenchman is a two-time Wimbledon semifinalist and a US Open semifinalist. His best outing at Roland Garros came in 2016 when he reached the quarterfinals. Gasquet has won 16 ATP Tour titles in his 22-year career. He says to retire in front of his home fans will be magnificent.
