Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with cricket: Proteas captain Laura Wolvaardt says their fielding will need to improve in their T20 Women’s World Cup Group B encounter against Scotland in Dubai today. Fielding errors including dropped catches were crucial mistakes they made in their seven-wicket loss to England. Wolvaardt says the accuracy and consistency of the spin bowlers will also need to improve. The Proteas still have a chance of reaching the semifinals with two must-win games against Scotland and Bangladesh.
# Road running: The Cape Town Marathon is being evaluated for inclusion in the prestigious Abbott World Marathon Majors by 2026. A key criterion is ensuring a car-free route for the 2024 race. To achieve this, several roads will be designated no-parking zones on race day, 20 October. City officials urge residents and visitors to comply to support Cape Town’s bid for global recognition.
# Golf: Winning European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald says Sergio García is considering rejoining the DP World Tour to be eligible for next year’s Ryder Cup. The Spaniard resigned from the tour last year after a sports arbitration panel ruled sanctions imposed on the former Masters champion and others who joined LIV Golf, were appropriate. García was absent when Donald’s European team saw off the US in Rome last year. Donald says García understands what is required:
# Soccer: Former Spanish and Barcelona midfielder Andrés Iniesta’s glittering professional career of 24-years has come to an end. The 40-year-old made his debut for his country in 2006 after playing for junior national teams for six years, and scored 13 goals in his 131 appearances. He also scored 35 goals for Barcelona in his 442 matches for the club. Iniesta was emotional when he announced his retirement, but says those were tears of emotion and pride after realising his childhood dream of being a soccer player.
# And finally, tennis: Former world number one Novak Djokovic is still on course to clinch the 100th title of his glittering career in China. The Serb demolished young Italian Flavio Cobolli 6-1, 6-2 to reach the last 16 of the Shanghai Masters. The 37-year-old only conceded seven points on serve throughout the match. Djokovic plays Roman Safiullin of Russia for a place in the quarterfinals today. American Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer of Switzerland are the only two players in history to win 100 professional tournaments.
