# President Cyril Ramaphosa has praised teachers for their vital role in shaping learners’ futures during the 24th National Teaching Awards. He emphasised the importance of treating learners as unique individuals, highlighting how devoted educators can inspire and guide them. Ramaphosa called for increased support and resources for teachers to enhance the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics education system know as STEM:
The South African Democratic Teachers Union has also praised educators for their role in enhancing education, as the world marks World Teachers’ Day. Spokesperson Nomusa Cembi emphasised the need to recognise teachers’ achievements while addressing challenges like budget cuts. She also called for valuing teachers’ voices and ensuring their concerns are heard and acted upon:
And, the Representative Council of Learners in the Western Cape has expressed gratitude to teachers for shaping the future of the province and beyond. Chairperson Justin Naude praised educators for their dedication, saying they inspire and equip learners with vital skills. He highlighted teachers’ efforts in adapting to change and fostering inclusivity, calling them key figures in learners’ journeys to success:
# The South African National Space Agency has warned of a possible geomagnetic storm expected this weekend, disrupting communications and navigation systems. The storm, caused by a solar flare, may also lead to a rare appearance of the southern lights over South African skies. The flare, recorded on 3 October, is the strongest Earth-facing event in seven years. SANSA warns of geomagnetic conditions ranging from minor to severe, with potential impacts on power grids and essential systems across the globe.
# We end with soccer: The MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC in Durban tonight gives the players on either side the chance to write their names into the history books and earn a cool ten-million-rand for their club. Beyond the prize money, there is also prestige at stake at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. For Pirates it is a chance to win an unprecedented third MTN8 title in a row, and for Stellenbosch a chance to claim their maiden trophy win in the top eight competition. Kick-off is at 6pm.
