Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We kick off with rugby: Leinster expects Springbok lock RG Snyman to return to action soon. A foot injury prevented him from playing for the team since joining from Munster. He sustained the injury before South Africa’s opening Rugby Championship Test against Australia in Brisbane in August. Leinster coach Jacques Nienaber believes Snyman could be included in the starting team for this weekend’s United Rugby Championship game against Benetton in Treviso. He was comfortable during training since last week.
More rugby news: Under-fire Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt will probably lose the services of utility back Jordan Petaia for next year’s series against the British and Irish Lions. He reportedly turned down various lucrative offers from European clubs to pursue his dream to play in the National Football League. Petaia will attend a development camp in Florida early next year after his current contract with the Reds expires in November. The 24-year-old played 31 Tests for Australia since making his debut during the 2019 World Cup in Japan.
# Cricket: M-I Cape Town bought Proteas opening batter Reeza Hendricks for 4.3-million-rand at the SA20 player auction in Cape Town. He was released from the Joburg Super Kings. MI also secured Colin Ingram, Dane Piedt, and rookie Tristan Luus. Defending champions the Sunrisers Eastern Cape got England’s Richard Gleeson for 2.3-million-rand, and Okuhle Cele, and rookie Daniel Smith. Pretoria Capitals bought Evin Lewis of the West Indies for 1.5-million-rand. The Joburg Super Kings secured the services of Evan Jones and Wihan Lubbe for 175-thousand-rand apiece.
The Proteas Women suffered a 28-run defeat to India in Dubai, in their final warm-up match for the T20 World Cup. India posted 144 for seven in their 20 overs with Richa Ghosh scoring 36 and Deepti Sharma unbeaten on 35. Ayabonga Khaka was the pick of the bowlers for South Africa, claiming five wickets. In reply, the Proteas could only reach 116 in their 20 overs. South Africa kicks off their World Cup campaign against the West Indies on Friday.
# And finally, tennis: World number two Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus won her 15th match in a row to reach the quarterfinals of the China Open. The top seed easily got rid of American Madison Keys and will next face Czech player Karolina Muchova for a place in the penultimate round. The US Open champion will take a major step towards overtaking Iga Świątek of Poland at the top of the rankings if she wins the tournament. Świątek isn’t playing in Beijing.
