In this bulletin:
# ActionSA lays criminal charges against Justice minister Thembi Simelane
# Government is urged to implement preventative measures against natural disasters
# And soccer: Erik Ten Hag is apparently just safe for Manchester United’s next two games
# ActionSA has filed criminal charges against Justice minister Thembi Simelane over an alleged VBS-linked loan to buy a coffee shop. ActionSA’s Athol Trollip alleges she violated the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act and also committed forgery over a 575-thousand-600 loan from Gundo Wealth Solutions. ActionSA claims the documents were forged to legitimise an unlawful transaction. Trollip calls for her suspension pending the investigation:
# Stellenbosch University’s professor Guy Midgley is urging government to implement preventative measures against natural disasters and extreme weather linked to climate change. Severe weather has been experienced in parts of the country in the past few months, including snow in KwaZulu-Natal. Midgley is advocating for investments in advanced weather services, early warnings, and proper evacuation strategies to protect lives. He believes expertise and funding can help effectively address these challenges.
Meanwhile, the South African Weather Service forecasts a La Niña event this December and January, bringing above-average rainfall to the southern region. Lead scientist Christien Engelbrecht warns of a potential summer heatwave, urging South Africans to stay hydrated to prevent heat-related fatalities. She warns of high temperatures expected across the country during this period:
# Three people died and 15 others were injured when a man went on a stabbing rampage inside a Walmart supermarket in Shanghai. Chinese police arrested a 37-year-old man at the scene. The incident took place at a shopping mall in Songjiang, a densely populated district in the city’s south-west, which is also home to several universities. Police say the three people who died, succumbed to their injuries in hospital. Firearms are banned in China, but the country has seen a spate of knife attacks in recent months.
# Soccer: Erik ten Hag will remain Manchester United’s head coach for at least the next two matches. The Dutchman is under pressure after the famous English club lost nil-3 to Tottenham Hotspur this weekend, leaving them with just seven points after six Premier League games and in 12th place on the log. The team ended in a lowly eighth position last season. The next two encounters, against FC Porto on Thursday and Aston Villa on Sunday, will reportedly be crucial for Ten Hag’s career at Old Trafford.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-28-cents and the euro at 19-rand-15-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-3-cents and Bitcoin trades at 63-thousand-445-dollars-2-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-651-dollars-2-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 70-dollars-78-cents a barrel.
