In this bulletin:
# Significant petrol and diesel price cuts are announced for Wednesday
# ActionSA threatens to withdraw if the ANC fields its own mayoral candidate for Tshwane
# And tennis: Naomi Osaka sets up a showdown with Coco Gauff in the China Open
# South Africans will see fuel prices drop significantly on Wednesday. The price of 95 unleaded petrol will be reduced by 1-rand-14-cents per litre, and 93 octane petrol by 1-rand-6-cents per litre. Diesel prices will fall by up to 1-rand -14-cents per litre, while illuminating paraffin drops by 1-rand-11-cents per litre. However, liquefied petroleum gas prices will rise by 23-cents per kilogramme. These reductions bring fuel costs to levels before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, driven by falling Brent oil prices and a stronger rand.
# ActionSA has threatened to withdraw its support if the ANC fields its own mayoral candidate in Tshwane. It has been reported that the ANC will put forward Kgosi Maepa as its mayoral candidate to replace the DA’s Cilliers Brink, who was removed by a motion of no confidence last Thursday. ActionSA has stated that it will nominate deputy mayor Nasiphi Moya. Chairperson Michael Beaumont told News24 if the ANC renege on their deal, they are going to find themselves governing without a majority.
# The DA in Gauteng is alarmed at the delay in the implementation of recommendations made in the damning report on Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital in Johannesburg. Eighteen months after the Health Ombud released the report, only half of the 44 recommendations have been implemented. The DA’s Jack Bloom says a critical recommendation that has not been implemented is the appointment of an independent forensic and audit firm to assess the competency of hospital management, and review corporate governance:
# The Al Jama-ah Party is calling on government to impose economic and trade sanctions on Israel. This follows after the leader of the Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on his underground headquarters in Beirut last Friday. Al Jama-ah’s Ganief Hendricks says they condemn the actions of Israel and completely support the liberation of Palestine:
# Tennis: Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka has set up a fourth-round clash with American Coco Gauff at the China Open in Beijing. The Japanese defeated 60th-ranked American Katie Volynets 6-3, 6-2. Gauff booked her place in the last 16 with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Britain’s Katie Boulter. Tomorrow’s match between Osaka and Gauff will be their first meeting in over two years.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-14-cents and the euro at 19-rand-20-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-98-cents and Bitcoin trades at 63-thousand-864-dollars-66-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-649-dollars-68-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 71-dollars-74-cents a barrel.
