# DA leader John Steenhuisen says the party’s 100 days since joining the government of national unity has driven South Africa’s growth and job creation. Steenhuisen says by prioritising economic growth, the DA’s achievements include clearing a 250-thousand ID backlog, promoting spending reviews, concessioning ports, rail reforms, and developing digital transformation at Home Affairs. He says these efforts aim to drive growth, reduce unemployment, and ensure efficient governance across departments.
# Deputy national police commissioner Shadrack Sibiya has revealed that police have made progress against extortion rackets in the past two months. Speaking at a News24’s summit, Sibiya said kidnappings and extortion had surged but were now being curtailed, with many suspects facing court. He indicated that coordinated police efforts are gradually reducing extortion activities nationwide.
# Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has condemned the mass shooting in Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape, where 18 people were killed. A two-month-old baby survived. Mchunu confirmed police are investigating the motive and expressed concern over the prevalence of illegal firearms in communities:
# The Western Cape Education Department has warned matric candidates that cheating in the upcoming exams, carries severe consequences. Candidates sign a pledge and commitment agreement acknowledging exam rules and penalties. Last year, 22 students were disqualified for using crib notes or cell phones. MEC David Maynier says cheating can result in nullified results or a ban from writing subsequent exams:
# Israel says it has carried out large-scale air strikes on Yemen, targeting what it calls military targets of the Houthi terrorist regime. The targets included a seaport, weapons warehouses, and other infrastructure. The Iran-backed Houthis have launched missiles and drones at Israel and disrupted global trade through the Red Sea in response to Israel’s ongoing assault on Gaza. The strikes come as Israel carried out attacks across Lebanon, including on Dahieh, Hezbollah’s stronghold in southern Beirut.
# Motorsport: Spain’s Jorge Martin extended his championship lead by winning the Indonesia Moto Grand Prix, his third victory of the season. The Prima Pramac Racing finished ahead of fellow Spaniard Pedro Acosta in second and championship rival Francesco Bagnaia in third. South Africa’s Brad Binder finished eighth for KTM. Martin, who took a valuable 25 points in his championship charge, extending his advantage from over Bagnaia to 21, says it was a tough race:
