# Nobel Laureate Abdulrazak Gurnah commended South Africa’s efforts in ending the Gaza conflict. Speaking at the 22nd Nelson Mandela lecture in Johannesburg, Gurnah criticised Israeli leaders for perpetuating the war, which has claimed thousands of lives and displaced hundreds of thousands. He warned that without decisive action, the International Court of Justice ruling will remain ineffective in stopping Gaza’s violence:
# The South African government expresses concern over the recent escalation of extrajudicial killings in the Middle East, including the assassination of Hassan Nasrallah in Lebanon. Attacks have killed over 720 people, displaced 211-thousand, and forced healthcare centers to close. South Africa calls for an immediate ceasefire, adherence to international law, and a transparent investigation. The government has urged accountability and global efforts to prevent further violence. It says it stands in solidarity with the Government of Lebanon and expressed support in the aftermath of attacks.
# The Lusikisiki shooting death toll has risen to 18 after a man died in hospital this morning. He was among the people shot in two separate homes. A two-month-old baby survived. Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo plans to install new, lighter rings until the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, has sparked mixed reactions.
