# An education activist says SADTU defiance on president Ramaphosa raises concerns

# Education activist Hendrick Makaneta has criticises the South African Democratic Teachers Union’s decision to defy president Cyril Ramaphosa’s three-month pause on clauses 4 and 5 of the Basic Education Laws Amendment Act. Makaneta calls Sadtu’s stance reckless and disappointing, as Ramaphosa seeks discussions to refine the law. He urges Sadtu to respect the process and prioritise the education sector’s interests:
# The Eastern Cape government has condemned the loss of 20 lives in two incidents. Seventeen people were killed in a mass shooting in Lusikisiki, while two toddlers and a baby died from suspected food poisoning in Mdantsane. Spokesperson Khuselwa Rantjie says premier Oscar Mabuyane has condemned the violence. In addition, psycho-social support will be provided to affected families:
Meanwhile, theEasten Cape Transport and Community Safety MEC Xolile Nqatha condemned the shootings. Thirteen were killed in one house, including 12 women, while four more died in another. An 18th victim is in critical condition. A two-month-old baby was not harmed, but is in hospital for a medical checkup. The motive for the murders is still unknown. Nqatha has called on the police to pursue the culprits. He has also urged community assistance in the investigation.
# The Anglican Church of Southern Africa has voted against a proposal allowing bishops to bless same-sex couples in welcoming parishes. During a synod meeting, the proposal, introduced by Right Reverend Raphael Hess, was rejected after a debate. The church emphasised the need for unity and adherence to traditional teachings. The decision comes despite Archbishop Thabo Makgoba calls for inclusivity and concerns from younger members about the church’s stance on LGBTQI relationships.
# And finally, Rugby: Springbok captain Siya Kolisi says winning the Rugby Championship was something they’d talked about and worked towards this year. Now that they’ve won it, the Bok captain has demanded they not be satisfied and keep winning. The Bok victory also made lock Eben Etzebeth’s caps record milestone a memorable one. The comprehensive win of 48-7 in front of 42 000 fans in Mbombela secure their first full Rugby Championship title for the Springboks since 2009 and they are in now possession of every major trophy they have played for over the last four years.
