BULLETIN 28 September 8 am
Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# Freedom Under Law welcomes interdict against Hlophe’s JSC participation
# Police minister and Eastern Cape premier sign safety agreement
# And, Rugby: Much on the line in today’s final Rugby Championship round
# Freedom Under Law supports the Western Cape High Court’s decision to interdict impeached former judge John Hlophe from the Judicial Service Commission. The interdict stands until legal challenges are resolved. The movement states that the court found a strong case against his appointment, ensuring he won’t join JSC’s October session. The movement argues that Hlophe’s participation threatens judicial independence, citing his removal for gross misconduct.
# The National Prosecuting Authority welcomes the 20-year prison sentences given to former Kruger National Park rangers Lucky Mkanzi and Nzima Joel Sihlangu for rhino poaching. The Skukuza Regional Court in Mpumalanga convicted the two on charges of conspiracy and killing two rhinos in 2018. NPA regional spokesperson, Monica Nyuswa says poaching threatens endangered species and the environment, and this sentencing sends a strong message to protect wildlife for future generations:
# Police minister Senzo Mchunu and Eastern Cape premier Oscar Mabuyane have signed an agreement in Nelson Mandela Bay Metro to boost public safety. This follows increased crime, including kidnappings and extortion. Mabuyane urges military deployment at key infrastructure projects as well as deployment and coordinating efforts of national and local police. Meanwhile, Mchunu advocates using technology to track criminal movements:
# Tropical Storm Helene caused widespread flooding in the southeastern parts of the USA, including Florida, leaving at least 33 people dead and hundreds of thousands wtihout electricty. Police and firefighters carried out thousands of water rescues throughout affected states, including in Atlanta, Georgia, where an apartment complex had to be evacuated due to flooding. Helene came ashore in Florida with winds up to 225 kilometres per hour , weakening to a tropical storm as it moved into Georgia early yesterday.
# And finally, Rugby: Much is on the line in today’s final round of the Rugby Championship. South Africa needs just one log point against Argentina to clinch the title for the first time since 2019, while the Pumas need a bonus point victory and prevent the Springboks from scoring a log point to be crowned champions for the first time ever. If the All Blacks beat the Wallabies this morning, they can finish second if the Boks win this afternoon, while Australia will earn the wooden spoon whatever the results are.
