In this bulletin:
# John Hlophe is barred from participating in the activities of the Judicial Service Commission
# The DA will field Cilliers Brink to return as Tshwane’s mayor
# And tennis: Alcaraz hopes the Davis Cup finals won’t be the end of Nadal’s career
# The Western Cape High Court has interdicted MK Party deputy president, John Hlophe, from participating in any activities of Parliament’s Judicial Service Commission. The ruling follows an application by the DA and Freedom Under Law, who argued it was irrational for Hlophe, the first judge to be fired, to be part of the body responsible for interviewing judges and overseeing judiciary discipline. Sworn in earlier this year, Hlophe now serves as opposition leader and a member of the same Parliament that voted for his removal.
# The DA leader in Gauteng, Solly Msimanga, says the party will field Cilliers Brink as mayoral candidate for the City of Tshwane to continue making progress in the metro. Msimanga was speaking during a news conference to reflect on the outcome of the motion of no confidence against Brink that succeeded in council yesterday. He says ActionSA’s president, Herman Mashaba, told journalists they had a deal with the ANC to make Nasiphi Moya the mayor:
# Teachers’ union Sadtu has welcomed the order of the Labour Court directing Rand Mutual Assurance to refund its members. This is for the unlawful deductions from the salaries of educators in KwaZulu-Natal by Rand Mutual Assurance collaborating with the Educators Union of South Africa, purportedly as an insurance scheme. Sadtu general secretary, Mugwena Maluleke, says unlawful deductions were made on the salaries of eight-thousand-808 educators without their knowledge and consent:
# Tennis: World number three Carlos Alcaraz hopes November’s Davis Cup Finals won’t be his famous Spanish compatriot Rafael Nadal’s swansong. The 38-year-old winner of 22 Grand Slam tournaments had been announced in the country’s squad along with Alcaraz, Roberto Bautista Agut, Pablo Carreno Busta and Marcell Granollers, for the event in Málaga. Nadal and Alcaraz participated in the doubles at the Paris Olympic Games, and the younger player says he will savour every moment they share on and off the court.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-17-cents and the euro at 19-rand-14-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-97-cents and Bitcoin trades at 65-thousand-819-dollars-93-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-660-dollars-44-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 73-dollars-71-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Grammy-award-winning musician Tyla has received the most nominations for the 30th South African Music Awards set to be held in November. Tyla has bagged five nominations for her self-titled debut album, including album of the year, female artist of the year, and best collaboration for her hit song, Water, featuring Travis Scott. Kabza de Small, Mthunzi, and Mbuso Khoza have each received three nominations. Recording Industry of South Africa CEO, Nhlanhla Sibisi, says this year’s selection showcases the incredible diversity, talent, and creativity in South African music.
