Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanks Cyril Ramaphosa for supporting Ukraine’s territorial integrity
# The MK Party misses the court deadline for the punitive costs order for its election-rigging case
# And rugby: Sam Cane is to play his 100th All Black Test against Australia
# Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has thanked president Cyril Ramaphosa and South Africa for supporting his country’s territorial integrity amid the war with Russia. The two leaders met on the sidelines of the United Nations Summit of the Future in New York. Zelenskyy has emphasised that only the unity of world leaders can force Russian president Vladimir Putin to stop the war:
# The MK Party has missed an Electoral Court deadline to submit heads of argument on why it should not receive a punitive costs order for the abandonment of its election rigging case. The party withdrew its challenge on the validity of the May elections, where it alleged that more than 9.3 million votes were unaccounted for. It also claimed it had evidence of serious irregularities. In court papers, the IEC says from the start MK had no evidence of vote rigging, yet it persisted in making scandalous and prejudicial allegations.
# Swiss police have arrested several people after a controversial futuristic-looking capsule designed to allow its occupant to kill themself was used for the first time. Prosecutors in the northern canton of Schaffhausen, bordering Germany, have opened criminal proceedings against several people for inducing and aiding and abetting suicide. A spokesperson for the group behind the capsule, The Last Resort, says the deceased was a 64-year-old American woman who had been suffering from a severely compromised immune system. The group has described the woman’s death as peaceful, fast and dignified.
# Rugby: Sam Cane will play his 100th Test for New Zealand on Saturday after being named in the starting lineup to face Australia in the final Rugby Championship match in Wellington. Beauden Barrett returns after illness and will partner scrumhalf TJ Perenara, who has replaced Cortez Ratima. Anton Lienert-Brown comes in at inside centre for Jordie Barrett, who has a knee injury, and Damian McKenzie drops to the bench. Coach Scott Robertson says they would have loved to win the championship:
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-17-cents and the euro at 19-rand-12-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-91-cents and Bitcoin trades at 63-thousand-775-dollars-19-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-667-dollars-6-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 73-dollars-71-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Astronomers have observed a massive pair of jets releasing from a supermassive black hole 7.5-billion light-years from Earth. The megastructure spans 23-million light-years in length, making these black hole jets the largest ever seen. The newly described jets have a power output equivalent to that of trillions of suns. The discovery is causing astronomers to rethink their understanding of how massive black hole jets can be as well as how these giant features can affect their surroundings and the structure of the universe.
