# AZAPO has urged the government to address the poor treatment of patients in public hospitals after a mother found her disabled child in filthy conditions at Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Tshwane. The party condemned the lack of respect from the staff. AZAPO spokesperson Jabu Rakwena called on Health minister Aaron Motsoaledi to urgently improve healthcare standards in public healthcare, as these issues threaten the credibility of the National Health Insurance initiative:
# KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has warned communities of potential flooding risks as snow melts in the highlands. He praised disaster response teams for their efforts during the recent snowstorm, which resulted in the deaths of at least two people from hypothermia. The department’s Senzelwe Mzila urged motorists to drive cautiously and advised parents to supervise children near water:
# A 20-year-old American woman was found dead on a hiking trail on Table Mountain. According to police spokesperson Malcolm Pojie a search party found the woman’s body on Sunday afternoon in an area which is part of Devil’s Peak. The body was retrieved by helicopter:
Meanwhile, South African National Parks says it has taken note of reports suggesting that there is growing concern over crime in the Table Mountain National Park. SANParks’ spokesperson JP Louw says over the last year the official crime statistics have drastically decreased from 16 and 32 respectively in October and November last year, to six in July and three in August this year. Louw says as such, SANParks vehemently discourages the use of unverifiable and subjective statistics:
# Cricket: Prabath Jayasuriya took five wickets to steer Sri Lanka to a 63-run victory against New Zealand on the final morning of the first Test in Galle. Set a target of 275 to win, the Black Caps were bowled out for 211 less than 15 minutes after play resumed, with Rachin Ravindra top-scoring on 92. Jayasuriya took nine wickets across the match and finished the second innings on five for 68. The second and final match of the series will be held at the same venue from Thursday.
