BULLETIN 23 September 1:30 pm
Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# Deputy minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Narend Singh, is urging the public to heed severe weather warnings and consider their plans, including travel, carefully. Over the weekend, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Free State, and Eastern Cape experienced a major drop in temperatures, with snow reported. Two people lost their lives, after being trapped in snow on the N3 in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. Both died of hypothermia. Department’s spokesperson, Peter Mbelengwa, says relief efforts are ongoing in parts of the country:
# The City of Tshwane says it recognises the vital role bees play in pollination and sustaining the local ecosystem. According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, a third of the world’s food production depends on bees. Councillor Marika Kruger-Muller says it is imperative that Tshwane prioritises public safety by educating residents about which plants and flowers attract bees, and which species should be avoided near homes:
# And The Independent has launched its inaugural Climate 100 List, which includes activists, scientists, academics, philanthropists, political leaders, business and tech leaders, and fashion entrepreneurs. Individuals who have made the list have innovated with solutions such as hydrogen storage, discovering plastic-eating bacteria, and revolutionising chemical-free textile dyeing. They include Prince William, who heads the Prince of Wales’ flagship initiative Earthshot Prize, environmental activist Greta Thunberg, Kenyan-American climate activist Wawa Gatheru, founder of Black Girl Environmentalist, and co-founder of Polluters Out, Ayisha Siddiqa.
