# President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed confidence in the durability of the government of national unity, asserting that it will effectively address local government challenges. He has pledged to complete his term if he continues to have the support of the ANC. In a conversation with members of the media, Ramaphosa called for intensified efforts against corruption, improved service delivery and boosting local economic development to create a supportive environment for investment:
# COSATU has noted with disappointment president Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to delay the implementation of two clauses of the Basic Education Laws Amendment Bill despite signing it into law. However, the federation appreciates that the President has set a time limit of three months during which parties can engage further on the two clauses that pertain to school admissions and language policy. Cosatu spokesperson Zanele Sabela says the Act’s progressive goals must remain intact including Grade R inclusion and strengthened school safety measures:
# The DA is demanding answers from the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements regarding unexplained delays in allocating temporary Covid-19 container homes in Marlboro and Alexandra. DA Gauteng Human Settlements spokesperson, Mervyn Cirota warns that the four-year delay has led to illegal invasions and vandalism, as frustrated residents await dignified housing:
# More than 30-thousand workers at aircraft maker Boeing are to go on strike for the first time since the global financial crash, piling more pressure on the troubled company. This is the first time since 2008 that workers have gone on strike. Workers rejected increases of 25-percent over four years as unions had asked for a pay rise of 40-percent. The planned strike is a setback for new CEO Kelly Ortberg. He took over less than two months ago after a safety crisis when a door blew off a Boeing plane.
# And, soccer: Excitement is running high for the new Premier League season, which kicks off today. Royal AM host Cape Town City at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg this afternoon. Polokwane City tackles AmaZulu later, but the focus will be on Kaizer Chiefs, who open their campaign at the Free State Stadium against newly-promoted Marumo Gallants. Champions Mamelodi Sundowns’ first match is at home on Tuesday evening, when they take on SuperSport United.
