# The National Prosecuting Authority welcomes the 20-year prison sentences for the poaching of two endangered black rhinos at the Great Fish River Nature Reserve in the Eastern Cape. The High Court in Makhanda found Arthus Machava and Disco Mahlaule guilty on multiple charges, including theft of rhino horns and possession of unlicensed firearms. NPA regional spokesperson Luxolo Tyali Poaching says the duo were part of a poaching syndicate targeting endangered wildlife:
# The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds says it is concerned about the African penguin population at St Croix Island in the Eastern Cape following an oil spill in Algoa Bay. The South African Maritime Safety Authority is investigating the spill, believed to have originated from a container cargo vessel, MSC Apollo. The foundation says other seabirds such as Cape gannets and cormorants could also be affected by the oil spill.
# And, the DA in the Northern Cape says the Warrenvale Combined School is the latest casualty of the ongoing Magareng sewage spills. A sewage spill in the vicinity of the school was first sighted and reported to the municipality in June. The DA’s Deidre Watson says foul odours permeate the school and surrounding homes, exposing the greater Warrenton community to harmful bacteria and pollutants:
