# The Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Palm Ridge in Gauteng has postponed the corruption case against former Sports, Arts and Culture minister Zizi Kodwa and ex-EOH director Jehan MacKay until 3 October. The delay is due to the Director of Public Prosecutions still awaiting representations from MacKay’s legal team. The pair faces charges related to over 1.6-million-rand in alleged bribes for government IT tenders. Kodwa’s lawyer, Zola Majavu, expressed frustration over the delays:
# The Mankweng Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo has postponed the bail applications of three men accused of killing two women and feeding their bodies to pigs. Farmer Zachariah Olivier and two employees, Rudolph de Wet and William Musoro, are facing counts of premeditated murder, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. One of the accused claims police assaulted and tortured him, threatening to file criminal charges. Magistrate Arshard Chaia referred the case to the Regional Court in Polokwane:
# The Vaal River has officially reopened for boating season after 398 hectares of invasive plants, including water lettuce and hyacinth, were removed. The overgrowth had reduced water visibility to less than one hectare, crippling tourism and boating activities. Local government, community groups, and Rand Water collaborated on the ten-million-rand effort. The reopening seeks to bring relief to the Vaal’s hospitality industry and the Spring sailing season.
# Cricket: Several key players are rested for the Proteas’ tour to the United Arab Emirates for three one-day games against Afghanistan and two T20s and three ODIs against Ireland. Twenty-one-year-old Dolphins all-rounder Andile Simelane received a maiden call-up to gain exposure to the national set-up. Another Dolphins all-rounder, Jason Smith, and Lions spinner Nqaba Peter are both included in the ODI squad for the first time. Proteas white-ball coach Rob Walter says they are looking to develop more all-rounders:
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-88-cents and the euro at 19-rand-74-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-42-cents and Bitcoin trades at 57-thousand-175-dollars-43-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-505-dollars-3-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 71-dollars-14-cents a barrel.
# And, finally: Disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein is in intensive care, recovering from emergency heart surgery. The 72-year-old was taken from Rikers Island prison, where he is serving a sentence for rape, to Bellevue Hospital in New York. Weinstein underwent a procedure to remove fluid from around the heart and lungs but he is not in critical condition. He is due for a retrial on Thursday after his 2020 rape conviction was thrown out. Weinstein is serving a 16-year prison sentence for another rape in 2022.
