# New Development Bank cancels loan to Eskom for Medupi project

# The New Development Bank has cancelled Eskom’s around 8.5-billion-rand loan for the reduction of sulphur dioxide emissions at Medupi Power Station in Limpopo. The loan was approved in March 2019 and was aimed at financing flue-gas desulphurisation technology at the plant. The bank’s processes are such that funds must be reallocated to other investments if implementation of the project is stalled. Eskom told News24 that the processes to plan and provide the capital expenditure required, as well as internal discussions, due diligence and approvals, took longer than anticipated.
# The minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson, plans to invite Chinese companies, Communications Construction Company and ASI Global to help South Africa turning the country into a construction site. Macpherson says this follows the signing of two declarations of intent with both companies during an official state visit to China by president Cyril Ramaphosa:
# An investigation has been launched after a fire broke out at the Department of Correctional Services head office in Tshwane yesterday evening. The fire affected the sixth floor of the Poyntons Building. The department’s spokesperson, Singabakho Nxumalo, says the City of Tshwane Emergency Services responded promptly, and the fire was fully extinguished:
# The mother of the 14-year-old boy charged with killing four people at Apalachee High School in Georgia, reportedly called and warned the school of an extreme emergency before the attack. Colt Gray shot and killed two learners and two teachers while nine were injured. His father, Colin Gray, is accused of second-degree murder for providing his son with an AR15-style rifle. According to the Washington Post, the boy’s mother, Marcee Gray, asked school officials to check on her son the morning of the shooting after he texted her saying he’s sorry.
# Rugby: French Top 14 club Racing 92 has confirmed that it has reached an agreement with Springbok captain Siya Kolisi to part ways, with two years left on his contract. The 33-year-old joined Racing in January last year from the Sharks. He made only 18 appearances for the French club last season, scoring one try. Kolisi has been linked with a move back to the Sharks. Racing got their Top 14 season started on Saturday with a 31-28 loss to Castres.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-82-cents and the euro at 19-rand-75-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-40-cents and Bitcoin trades at 54-thousand-990-dollars-28-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-498-dollars-28-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 71-dollars-91-cents a barrel.
