# Giwusa demands an end to the corporate monopolisation of the food industry
# And, rugby: Cape Town will respect the haka on Saturday
# The MK Party has welcomed and appreciates the 17.86-billion-rand loan given to the South African government by the BRICS Bank to develop water and sanitation infrastructure. MK’s Floyd Shivhambu says the party also appreciates the five-billion-rand loan to Transnet. Shivhambu says they know such a loan will not come with neo-liberal and neo-colonial conditions that always accompany loans from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund:
# The General Industries Workers Union of South Africa is demanding an end to the corporate monopolisation of the food industry. It also asks for support for subsistence and small scale farming to broaden the base of food production and distribution. Giwusa president Mametlwe Sebei says according to FoodForward SA, 10-million tonnes of food goes to waste in South Africa each year. He says this is equivalent to 60-billion-rand worth of food that is wasted:
# Seven people, three of them children, have been killed in Ukraine’s western city of Lviv during a fresh wave of Russian attacks. The strike came as Ukraine was still reeling from the deaths of at least 50 people at a military institute in the central city of Poltava yesterday. Officials say Russia had attacked with drones and hypersonic missiles early today. Explosions were also heard over the capital Kyiv as air defences targeted Russian missiles. The Ukrainian military says the whole country has been placed under an air alert.
# Rugby: SA Rugby promised there will be no repetition of the noise during the haka in Saturday’s Rugby Championship Test between the Springboks and the All Blacks in Cape Town. New Zealand Rugby accepted CEO Rian Oberholzer’s apology for the load music, fireworks and a jet flying over Ellis Park when the Kiwi’s performed their traditional war dance last weekend. The haka dates back to the All Blacks’ tour of Europe in 1905. Assistant coach Jason Ryan says the Boks respected the challenge, as they always do.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-91-cents and the euro at 19-rand-79-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-50-cents and Bitcoin trades at 56-thousand-456-dollars-23-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-488-dollars-29-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 74-dollars-24-cents a barrel.
# And finally, sir Elton John has revealed he has been left with only limited vision in one eye after developing a severe eye infection. The 77-year-old singer said in a post to his 4.9-million Instagram followers he is healing, but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take time before vision to the impaired eye returns. Sir Elton announced his retirement from touring at Glastonbury last year. The documentary film Elton John: Never Too Late, will have its European premiere at the London Film Festival later this year.
