BULLETIN 4 September
Good afternoon, here is your Good News:
# South African actress Nomzamo Mbatha and Robert Irwin, the son of the late wildlife expert Steve Irwin, have been named the first-ever Earthshot Global Ambassadors. The Earthshot Prize was launched in 2020 by Prince William and natural historian David Attenborough to find innovative climate change solutions. From 2021 to 2030, the Prince of Wales and a panel representing six continents annually award The Earthshot Prize to five winners. The awards ceremony, previously held in London, Boston, and Singapore, will occur in Cape Town this year.
# Cape Town has been ranked seventh tied with Shanghai in China as one of the most affordable cities to visit in the world. Travel service Bounce collected data on the 75 most popular destinations in the world. The data was collected by looking at the cost of hotel rooms per night on a Friday and Saturday, meal prices at inexpensive restaurants, and the costs of alcohol and transport. Timișoara in Romania tops the list followed by Buenos Aires in Argentina and the third is Baku in Azerbaijan.
# Burgeoning fine artist, Thandabantu Matola, has made the top ten of a national arts competition, New Sasol Signatures. The 28-year-old Walter Sisulu University Fine Arts graduate was chosen from a pool of over one-thousand emerging artists. The university says Matola’s winning entry is a reflection on the often-overlooked symbols of poverty, using dishcloths to paint a powerful narrative of perseverance. Sasol New Signatures chairperson, Pfunzo Sidogi, says the ten artworks picked can easily hold their own at any major local or international art exhibition or fair.
# The Tshwane University of Technology has launched a dynamic and impactful initiative, the #Twentyfrom20 fundraising campaign. It is aimed at raising 1.2-million-rand in support of three vital projects of the institution. These are the Ndumo Community project in KwaZulu-Natal, the ICT Intervarsity Hackathon Series, and the Grade R Centre of Excellence: Early Childhood Development. Campaign manager Phumla Msibi says until the 30th of November they will seek the generosity of 60 companies, each committing to a donation of 20-thousand-rand.
# And, the Colour Your Passion Art Auction has raised three-thousand-200-rand to support a Cape Town-based non-profit organisation that provides dance classes to disadvantaged children, Dance For All. The auction celebrated women’s empowerment and attendees were encouraged to add a splash of colour to a large white canvas board, which was auctioned off. Colour Your Passion director Shantelle Engelbrecht says every event they do has a charitable arm.
