# Platinum group metals and chrome producer Northam has entered into a power purchase agreement with an independent power producer for an 80-megawatt solar farm at its Zondereinde mine in Limpopo. The solar facility will supply 15-percent of the group’s energy needs, enhancing stability against power disruptions. Northam CEO, Paul Dunne, says they will keep working on looking at other opportunities, whether they be solar or wind, to help the country secure energy security:
# The City of Cape Town says it is leading a proactive transition toward energy security, marked by record infrastructure investments including 9.4-billion-rand in 2023/’24. Mayoral committee member for Energy, Xanthea Limberg, says they are of the view that Just Energy Transition, or JET, is essential for South Africa’s clean energy future, sustainable development, and economic growth. She says JET municipal financing is one of the crucial levers required to unlock the full potential of South Africa’s growing renewable energy ecosystem:
# And, the MillionPlus initiative, led by Polyco NPC, has set an ambitious goal, to inspire at least one million South Africans to commit to recycling their plastic packaging. According to the 2024 Global E-waste Monitor report, South Africa generates the second-most e-waste in Africa, trailing only Egypt. The initiative seeks to combat plastic pollution and preserve the country’s natural beauty by encouraging widespread participation in recycling efforts. The overall goal is to eliminate plastic waste from the environment and make recycling a standard practice for everyone.
