# With the two-pot retirement system beginning today South Africans are advised to withdraw from their retirement savings only for emergencies. The system divides contributions into a savings pot and a retirement pot, with one-third accessible. Speaking to the SABC, Sanlam’s Johan Prinsloo stresses that this savings pot is a safety net, not a primary income source:
# Mandisa Maya has officially begun her tenure as South Africa’s first female chief justice, succeeding Raymond Zondo. Appointed by president Cyril Ramaphosa, Maya’s role includes leading the Constitutional Court and the judiciary. Her appointment follows rigorous scrutiny by the Judicial Service Commission, highlighting her exceptional qualifications and leadership. Previously head of the Supreme Court of Appeal, Maya’s extensive judicial experience underscores her capability in this historic position.
# Eleven people died in a head-on collision on the R622 between Greytown and Mooi River in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, with three people were killed in another crash in KwaDukuza on the KZN north coast. Six more people have died with ten in hospital in a taxi accident en route from Estcourt to Nkandla. Transport Department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya confirmed a thorough investigation will be conducted:
# The Democratic Republic of Congo is set to receive 65-thousand doses of the Mpox vaccine today. Nigeria has also started the immediate rollout of five-thousand of the ten-thousand vaccines, targeting high-risk groups, including health workers. WHO’s Africa director Matshidiso Moeti says this effort is part of Africa’s strategy to control the multi-country outbreak. She highlighted the international solidarity behind the initiative, as supplies will be provided by the USAID and Gavi.
# And rugby, the Sharks have secured a spot in the Currie Cup semifinals after demolishing the Griffons 75-19. The Sharks ran in 11 tries, with Springbok wing Makazole Mapimpi helping himself to four. In the weekend’s other matches, the Lions got the better of the Bulls with 57-33, while the Cheetahs had to bow the knee 44-31 to the Griquas. The Western Province and the Pumas will meet each other at three this afternoon. After nine matches each, the Lions are topping the log with 38 points, followed by the Bulls, Sharks and Cheetahs respectively.
