# South Africa is eager to learn from global experiences in renewable energy, grid modernisation, and rural electrification. During the BRICS High-Level Energy Seminar in Cape Town deputy president Paul Mashatile emphasised the importance of hydroelectric power, bioenergy, nuclear energy management, and innovative financing to enhance energy transmission and address socioeconomic challenges in the sector:
Mashatile also welcomed the New Development Bank’s 41-billion-rand investment for ten renewable energy projects. He highlighted the importance of South Africa’s transition to renewable energy. He also praised the bank’s commitment to infrastructure investment, including a five-billion-rand loan agreement with Transnet:
# Everest Wealth warns that quick withdrawals from the two-pot retirement system may be delayed until later in September as SARS issues guidelines. CEO Thys van Zyl highlights that the system which commences today has potential transaction fees and taxes, and warns withdrawals could reduce future retirement funds. He calls for caution noting long-term impacts on retirement savings as only six-percent of South Africans may retire comfortably.
# Rugby: The Springboks secured a 31-27 Rugby Championship victory over the All Blacks in a thrilling Test at Ellis Park yesterday evening. The All Blacks were ahead 27-17 with 12 minutes to go but two late tries by the Springboks saved the day. The Boks scored three tries through Bongi Mbonambi, Kwagga Smith and Grant Williams, while flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu contributed 16 points with the boot. New Zealand scored four tries to secure a try-scoring bonus point, as well as a bonus point for losing by fewer than seven points.
# And finally, US rapper Fatman Scoop has died aged 53 after collapsing at his concert on Friday in Connecticut. He was halfway through his set in the city of Hamden when he collapsed on stage. The rapper was taken to a local hospital by ambulance. His booking agency later confirmed his death in a statement to the BBC, saying his legacy will live on through his timeless music. Scoop, whose legal name is Isaac Freeman the Third, has been credited as an influential figure in New York City’s hip-hop scene in the 1990s.
