# HySA Infrastructure Centre of Competence at the North-West University and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research are collaborating to help South Africa and Africa transition towards a green economy. They are championing developments in water electrolysis for hydrogen production and storage. HySA Infrastructure’s professor Dmitri Bessarabov says challenges include hydrogen being an expensive source of fuel to produce and use, and a lack of regulations. Bessarabov says they are committed to positioning South Africa as a leader in the global green hydrogen market.
# The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is calling for nominations of the authors for the 2027 Methodology Report on Inventories for Short-lived Climate Forcers. The report will underpin renewed efforts to better equip all governments in the world to estimate high-quality emission data on short-lived climate forcers. Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories co-chairperson, Takeshi Enoki, says it is important that the author teams aim to reflect a range of scientific, technical and socio-economic views and backgrounds:
# And the City of Cape Town’s Energy and Water and Sanitation directorates recently completed a 990-kilowatt peak renewable energy project at the Kraaifontein wastewater treatment plant. An annual yield of 1.5-gigawatt is expected. Mayoral committee member for Energy, Xanthea Limberg, says the project was undertaken in support of the city’s commitment to use sustainable energy sources to drive energy efficiency and mitigate the effects of climate change:
