Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with rugby: Springbok number eight Elrigh Louw says they expect a massive onslaught from Australia in the second round of the Rugby Championship in Perth tomorrow. The Boks demolished the Wallabies 33-7 in Brisbane last weekend. Louw is one of five players who retained their places in the Springboks’ starting line-up and is set to make a second start for the world champions. He says Australia will sharpen up their game, but it is important that they just execute their game to the best of their ability.
# And on to cricket: No less than 17 wickets fell on the first day of the second Test between South Africa and the Windies in Georgetown, Guyana. Fast bowler Shamar Joseph took five wickets as the hosts bowled the Proteas out for 160 in their first innings. A tenth-wicket partnership of 63 between Dane Piedt and Nandré Burger saw the Proteas recover from 97 for nine. The Windies were then restricted to 97 for seven. Wiaan Mulder took four wickets:
Staying with cricket: October’s Women’s T20 World Cup may be in jeopardy because of the political unrest in host country Bangladesh. This followed after former prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India last week after weeks of deadly anti-government protests. The International Cricket Council says it’s closely monitoring the situation. It has meanwhile asked India to step in to host the tournament, but that country’s governing body refused because of monsoon season and it will host the Women’s One-day International World Cup next year.
# Olympic Games: The Court of Arbitration for Sport has refuted claims it was biased when it decided against USA Gymnastics’ appeal against the International Gymnastics Federation’s decision to upgrade Romania’s Ana Barbosu from fourth to third in the women’s floor final. This meant American gymnast Jordan Chiles lost out on a medal. The court upheld Romania’s appeal that the USA challenged a score outside the one-minute limit. American media alleged the head of the court’s panel deciding on the issue had links to Romania.
# And finally, tennis: Defending champion and second seed Coco Gauff is out of the Cincinnati Open after losing to Kazakhstan’s world number 34 Yulia Putintseva in three sets. Putintseva defeated the American, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. There were also wins for Spain’s Paula Badosa and American Taylor Townsend. In the men’s draw, Germany’s Alexander Zverev became the first player to earn 50 tour-level wins this season when he overcame Russia’s Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-2.
