Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# Today is World Elephant Day, a day to promote the conservation and protection of the animals worldwide. This year’s theme is, Personifying prehistoric beauty, theological relevance, and environmental importance. Elephants are known to be among the friendliest animals on Earth and play an important role in balancing the ecosystem. The Max Planck Institute of Animal Behaviour’s scientist, Stephen Blake, says elephants are simply one more natural resource that is being caught up in human greed on the one hand and human need on the other.
# By 2050 most of the world will be too hot to hold the Olympic Games, with much of North America predicted to have maximum wet-bulb globe temperatures exceeding 32-degrees Celsius. This is according to CarbonPlan, a climate science and analytics-focused nonprofit group. Wet-bulb globe temperature is a measurement combination of heat, humidity, wind speed, sun angle, and cloud cover. Much of eastern China, including Beijing and Shanghai, would be well above the limit. CarbonPlan says London, Oslo, and Stockholm may become more attractive for the event.
# And finally, scientists found a remarkably easy way to remove harmful microplastics from water – just by boiling it. The scientists say when water is boiled before being used, it can remove between 25- and 90-percent of the microplastics therein. The team from Guangzhou University in China says the simple boiling strategy can decontaminate nano and microplastics from tap water, and has the potential to harmlessly alleviate human intake of the plastic through water consumption.
