In this bulletin:
# Lesufi says Gauteng will continue with the Nasi Ispani programme
# Eskom reaches a 9.59-billion-rand reduction in diesel expenditure
# And, rugby: The Springboks demolish the Wallabies in Brisbane
# Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi has ensured that all Nasi iSpani programmes in the province will continue following protests by some beneficiaries. Lesufi gave an update on the status of the provincial government’s mass recruitment programme. The premier says last week, the provincial government received correspondence indicating that national government’s funding will continue and are finalising the model on how to best implement the programme nationally:
# Eskom says it has reached a 9.59-billion-rand reduction in open-cycle gas turbine diesel expenditure from 1 April to 7 August, compared to the same period last year. Eskom’s spokesperson Daphne Mokwena says the unplanned capacity loss factor continues to show a downward trend at 25.99-percent for the financial year to date, improving from 34.78-percent in the corresponding period last year:
# The City of Tshwane says it is on high alert and monitoring waste management services closely. This follows incidents of intimidation, threats and attacks on waste trucks in Nellmapius near Mamelodi and in Ekangala near Bronkhorstspruit. Mayoral committee member for Environment and Agriculture Management, Ziyanda Zwane, says Tshwane is working with law enforcement to investigate these isolated incidents:
# A man from California who attacked police officers with a flag pole and other weapons during the 6 January Capitol riot has been jailed for 20 years. Thirty-seven-year-old David Dempsey, who is regarded as one of the most violent members of the crowd during the attack, pleaded guilty. More than a thousand people have been arrested for crimes related to the riot, while hundreds have been convicted. Only Enrique Tarrio, the former leader of the far-right Proud Boys group, has received a longer sentence of 22 years.
# And we end on a high note with excellent rugby news: The Springboks annihilated Australia in the first Test this morning. They scored five tries to the home team’s one in Brisbane at the start of their Rugby Championship campaign. Kurt-Lee Arendse dotted down twice for the world champions, with Siya Kolisi, Pieter-Steph du Toit and Kwagga Smith scoring the other tries. Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu succeeded with four conversions in his debut for the Springboks to take the score to 33-7. The Boks led 21-0 at half-time. It was South Africa’s first win in Brisbane since 2013.
