# Human Settlements minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has dispatched the emergency housing team to urgently intervene and assist displaced families whose homes were flooded when the walls of two dams collapsed near Malmesbury in the Western Cape. The ministry’s spokesperson, Hlengiwe Nhlabathi-Mokota, says the ongoing assessment will inform interventions required, which include restoration, relocation, rebuilding and repairs:
# President Cyril Ramaphosa says millions of South African women are supported every month with social grants to enable them to care for their families and support their children. Ramaphosa addressed the National Women’s Day commemoration at the Dennis Nel Stadium in Pofadder in the Northern Cape. South Africa has one of the highest rates of female literacy in the region. The president says there is parity between girls and boys in primary school enrolment:
Meanwhile, government has strongly condemned the continuing acts of violence against women, which still plagues communities in the country. Spokesperson Nomonde Mnukwa says the abuse of the elderly and the continued scourge of gender-based violence and femicide in South Africa will not be tolerated. Following the celebration of Women’s Day, Mnukwa says government will continue to implement and strengthen measures aimed at protecting all citizens:
# Somalia’s cabinet has endorsed legislation to allow a one-person-one-vote system for elections for the first time in more than half a century in the troubled Horn of Africa nation. The law aims to replace a complex clan-based indirect voting system that has been in place since 1969, when the dictator Siad Barre seized power. However, it will have to go to parliament for approval before it can be officially signed into law by president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
# And, cricket: The West Indies trail South Africa by 212 runs at the start of day four of the first Test in Port of Spain, Trinidad. Keshav Maharaj claimed three wickets in 28 overs yesterday to reduce the hosts to 145 for four in reply to the Proteas’ total of 357 in their first innings. West Indies captain, Kraigg Brathwaite, fought back with 35 from 131 balls before he was run out. South Africa resumed yesterday on 344 for eight and only added 13 runs to their overnight total.
