# Kamala Harris announces Minnesota’s governor as her running mate in the American election
# And, Olympic Games: The South African sprinter Benjamin Richardson is out of the Paris Olympics due to an injury
# Police minister Senzo Mchunu has announced an urgent meeting with the Border Management Authority to address pressing border security issues. The meeting aims to tackle challenges related to illegal crossings and enhance border control measures. Briefing the media during the last day of the ANC’s national executive committee lekgotla in Boksburg, Mchunu says improved coordination and effective strategies are needed to enhance national security and manage border issues more effectively:
Meanwhile, the Southern African Agri Initiative says it has received communication from police that they have no policies or guidelines related to combatting illegal trespassing. Saai has been pressuring police since February to provide information and statistics on trespassing. The initiative’s CEO, Francois Rossouw, says management will now request a meeting with minister Mchunu to discuss possible solutions in the absence of the necessary policies:
# The National Union of Mineworkers says Eskom workers are the main contributors to the power utility’s energy availability factor of 70-percent, not management. NUM’s Thapelo Malekutu says the union also acknowledges the intervention and commitment made by minister of Electricity Kgosientso Ramokgopa. Malekutu says the working class needs such leaders in these difficult times:
# US media is reporting vice president Kamala Harris has selected 60-year old Minnesota governor Tim Walz as her running mate in the November election against former president and Republican candidate Donald Trump. The selection caps the Midwestern Democrat’s short but swift ascent from a relative unknown to a leading driver of the party’s attacks on Donald Trump. Harris and Walz will appear together in their first joint rally in Philadelphia later today before visiting other battleground states this week.
# Olympic Games: Team South Africa has confirmed sprinter Benjamin Richardson is out of the Games following a hamstring injury sustained in the men’s 200-metre race. Richardson was selected for the men’s four-by-100-metre relay team. Reserves Bayanda Walaza, Bradley Nkoana and Sinesipho Dambile, or long-jumper Cheswill Johnson may step in. Richardson’s absence leaves a gap in speed for the back straight. He clocked 9.86-seconds in Switzerland earlier this year, becoming the second fastest South African of all time.
# And, the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-49-cents and the euro at 20-rand-21-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-53-cents and Bitcoin trades at 56-thousand-217-dollars-99-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-396-dollars-47-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 76-dollars-64-cents a barrel.
