# Members of student body Cosas have set alight the Gauteng church of a pastor arrested in connection with intimidation and violence at Matsediso Primary School in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni. The pastor and three other people were arrested after he was allegedly seen charging staff members with a panga and forcibly removing his two grandchildren. The students apparently torched the church in support of the maternal side of the children’s family. Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, ward councillor Xolani Ngwenya condemned the violent incident:
Meanwhile, the DA has called on Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane to urgently enhance security measures at schools. The DA’s Gauteng education spokesperson, Michael Waters, demands accountability for the incident and urges a review of the school safety strategy to ensure a violence-free learning environment.
# Former president Jacob Zuma’s private prosecution against president Cyril Ramaphosa has been postponed to 6 February next year. Zuma appeared in the High Court in Johannesburg to keep his case active. He accuses Ramaphosa of being an accessory after the fact, alleging that leaked medical records during his arms deal trial breached the National Prosecuting Authority Act. Zuma’s lawyer, Dali Mpofu, told the court the new date allows for further legal processes and discussions:
# The National Union of Mineworkers is calling on Eskom to focus more on corruption by certain service providers at its power stations. NUM’s Thapelo Malekutu says the union is calling for harsher punishment to those who looted the utility and continue to do so without repercussions. Malekutu says Eskom must be defended and the economy and jobs too:
# Cricket: Afghanistan wicketkeeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz will represent Pretoria Capitals in next year’s edition of the SA20. He will reunite with coach Jonathan Trott, who helped Afghanistan reach the semifinal of the T20 World Cup for the first time earlier this year. Trott took over from Graham Ford recently. Twenty-two-year-old Gurbaz will play in the SA20 for the first time, but has already impressed in the Indian Premier League and the International League T20. He scored 281 runs during the World Cup.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-47-cents and the euro at 20-rand-15-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-47-cents and Bitcoin trades at 54-thousand-947-dollars-52-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-411-dollars-47-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 76-dollars-32-cents a barrel.
