# Four people have been arrested following acts of intimidation and violence at Matshidiso Primary School in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni. Gauteng police spokesperson Noxolo Kweza says the suspects, including a pastor and his security personnel, allegedly forcefully took two minor children from the school. She says they will appear at the Palm Ridge Court soon facing charges of assault, reckless handling of firearms, and intimidations:
# The DA urges the Department of Education in Gauteng to address a crisis in the school feeding scheme. The party argues the problems stem from a disputed one-billion-rand tender due to improper procurement processes. They call for immediate action to ensure learners receive nutritious meals essential for their education. The DA’s Sergio Isa dos Santos says inspections at several schools revealed irregular and inadequate food delivery:
# The two-pot retirement system, starting in September, is projected to boost South Africa’s household disposable income by up to 79-billion-rand in the fourth quarter of 2024, adding 0.1 to 0.3 percentage points to gross domestic product growth. Reserve Bank researchers expect the reforms to enhance retirement savings and reduce government debt-to-gross domestic product ratios by up to 1.0-percent by 2025/26. However, they project that high withdrawal rates could deplete retirement funds.
# Rugby: Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Elrigh Louw will make their first Test starts for South Africa in Saturday’s Rugby Championship opener against the Wallabies in Brisbane. The Springboks largely reverted to the squad that shared a two-Test series with Ireland last month, while including World Cup-winning scrumhalf Cobus Reinach and replacement utility forward Ben-Jason Dixon. Twenty-two-year-old Feinberg-Mngomezulu will start at flyhalf and Louw at number eight. Scrum coach Daan Human says Australia is playing good rugby at the moment:
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-54-cents and the euro at 20-rand-24-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-58-cents and Bitcoin trades at 54-thousand-774-dollars-10-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-411-dollars-62-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 76-dollars-20-cents a barrel.
# And finally, artists including platinum-selling singer-songwriter Jesse Clegg, Kamo Mphela, Lebo Mashile, and Zoë Modiga will perform at the Miss South Africa 2024 pageant in Pretoria on Saturday. The finalists include marketing manager and model, Mia le Roux, from the Western Cape, a model from Soweto, Gauteng, Taahira Katz, and law student Onalenna Constantin from North West. Natasha Joubert is the reigning Miss SA. Media personality and style icon, Bonang Matheba, will be the host.
