# Greenpeace Africa says the Climate Change Act is a step towards cleaner economies
# And a cargo ship with nine crew members sinks due to Typhoon Gaemi in Taiwan
# A Human Sciences Research Council survey shows that HIV prevalence for all ages in South Africa decreased from 14-percent in 2017 to 12.7-percent in 2022, translating to a decline from 7.9-million to 7.8-million people living with HIV. The sixth South African HIV Prevalence, Incidence, and Behaviour Survey, also shows females continue to be disproportionately affected by HIV, with a prevalence of 16.4-percent as compared to males at 8.8-percent of all ages. The country recorded an increase in antiretroviral treatment coverage, from 63.7-percent in 2017 to 80.9-percent in 2022.
# Greenpeace Africa has hailed the Climate Change Act as a significant step toward cleaner economies. President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the Climate Change Bill into law, setting a national response for mitigation and adaptation. Climate and energy campaigner Siyabonga Myeza highlighted to SABC the act’s role in South Africa’s climate leadership, promoting a fair, transparent, and just transition on the continent:
# The GOOD Party says the City of Cape Town’s Municipal Planning by-law reflect an apartheid approach to urban planning and an apartheid mentality to the location of affordable housing. The by-law regulates development and land use in Cape Town. GOOD’s secretary general, Brett Herron, says the by-law perpetuates spatial injustice:
# A Tanzanian-flagged cargo ship with nine Myanmar nationals on board has sunk off the southern port city of Kaohsiung in Taiwan as a result of Typhoon Gaemi. The typhoon, which has brought with it heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and a dangerous storm surge, has killed at least three people and injured over 200. Officials say three other foreign vessels had run aground during the typhoon, but were safe. Rescue operations have been put on hold as the winds are too strong and visibility is poor.
# Rugby League: Australia will host the rearranged 2026 World Cup. The tournament had been due to take place in France next year but the world governing body was forced to reorganise the calendar after the organisers pulled out for financial reasons. The 2025 men’s tournament was initially to feature 16 teams but this has been streamlined to 10 for 2026 and eight each for the women’s and wheelchair competitions. The tournaments will take place in October and November 2026 with some matches being staged in Papua New Guinea.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-47-cents and the euro at 20-rand-1-cent. One British pound costs 23-rand-81-cents and Bitcoin trades at 64-thousand-302-dollars-7-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-371-dollars-80-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 81-dollars-15-cents a barrel.
