# ActionSA is calling on Police minister Senzo Mchunu to not overlook qualified police reservists in his new recruitment drive. The minister has committed to enhancing police capacity by expanding their workforce to bolster their fight against crime. The planned workforce expansion centres on the appointment of ten-thousand police trainees in the 2024/2025 financial year. ActionSA’s, Dereleen James, says across the country, police reservists have answered the call of duty to assist in the fight against crime:
# Koeberg Nuclear Power Station in Cape Town is celebrating 40-years of safe operation since Unit 1’s start-up in 1984. The station has reliably supplied one-thousand-800 megawatts of clean energy, significantly benefiting South Africa’s economy. Recognised with multiple NOSCAR awards for safety, Koeberg plays a crucial role in the Western Cape’s energy supply. Eskom CEO Dan Marokane highlights its continued importance in reducing carbon emissions and ensuring energy security. He says the station’s licence extension secures its operation until 2044.
# The DA in the Western Cape says it supports the provincial government’s request to Agriculture minister, John Steenhuisen, for a temporary ban on the movement of cloven-hooved animals, such as sheep, pigs, and cattle. This is to contain the foot and mouth disease outbreak in Humansdorp, Eastern Cape. Twenty-three farms in the Humansdorp area and one farm in East London have been confirmed as positive for the disease. The DA’s, Noko Masipa, says the Western Cape has not reported any cases as yet:
# Donations to the Democratic Party have surged since president Joe Biden announced he won’t be seeking re-election and endorsed his vice president Kamala Harris. Some of the party’s top financiers opted to hold back funds after Biden’s June debate performance drew concerns from Democrats about his mental acuity. ActBlue, which funnels public donations to Democratic candidates, says grassroots supporters have now raised around eight-billion-rand since Biden endorsed Harris. About four-thousand Democratic delegates are set to meet in Chicago next month to pick the party’s nominee.
# Rugby: Springbok 2019 World Cup winner Sbu Nkosi has reportedly tested positive for a banned substance. According to the Sunday newspaper Rapport, the 28-year-old returned a positive test for an anabolic steroid mainly used by bodybuilders. He was one of three Springboks tested by World Rugby in May. If Nkosi’s B sample also tests positive, he faces a potential ban of up to four years. He is the fourth Springbok since 2019 to test positive for banned substances after Aphiwe Dyantyi, Chiliboy Ralepelle, and Elton Jantjies.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-25-cents and the euro at 19-rand-88-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-59-cents and Bitcoin trades at 67-thousand-819-dollars-7-cents.
