# The Gauteng Department of Health will tomorrow embark on the second edition of its surgical marathon initiative on Nelson Mandela Day, aiming to fast-track surgeries across key specialities. MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko will oversee the initiative at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, where over 120 surgeries are planned. The department’s Motalatale Modiba says this project aligns with the Mandela Day theme of combating poverty and inequality through collective action:
# Cape Town artists have teamed up to turn the renowned Sea Point promenade into an open-air art exhibition. Spearheaded by SJ Artists and property developer Blok, the initiative aims to enrich public spaces with vibrant murals. Featured artists include Mika Revell, Russell Abrahams and Amy-Leigh Braaf. People are encouraged to stroll along the promenade and explore each mural at their leisure. Each piece is accompanied by a plaque providing information about the artist and their work.
# The City of Johannesburg has launched its Vaya Smart Lift Club karaoke school competition. The winner will get two-thousand-500-rand cash and 50-thousand-rand for the school. The city’s spokesperson, Virgil James, says the competition aims to influence young minds to choose smarter, eco-friendly modes of transport such as carpooling, walking, and cycling:
# The DA in Limpopo says South African tennis star Kgothatso Montjane’s Wimbledon victory will encourage other young people, especially women, to follow their dreams. Montjane and her playing partner, Japan’s Yui Kamiji, won the women’s wheelchair doubles, marking their third overall doubles Grand Slam title. The DA’s Tiny Chidi says Montjane’s sole purpose is to spread hope:
# And, Madonna‘s biopic is back in the works after it was put on hold in January so she can focus on her global Celebration Tour. The new title is Who’s That Girl, a nod to Madonna’s 1987 film and song of the same name. Inventing Anna actress Julia Garner is reportedly still the frontrunner to portray the pop superstar, while Florence Pugh, Odessa Young, and Alexa Demie also auditioned for the lead role. The script is being rewritten by Madonna and Secretary writer Erin Cressida Wilson.
