# Four children, aged between three and eleven, died when their house caught fire at Calais Village in Maake, Limpopo. Police spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba says officers were called to the scene late on Friday night and found community members trying to assist. They managed to get the children out of the house, but Ledwaba says despite the rapid response by emergency services, the children sadly succumbed to the blaze.
# The minister of Electricity Kgosientsho Ramokgopa says energy and electricity are the major albatrosses that undermine the South African economy. Ramokgopa was speaking during the first cabinet lekgotla of the government of national unity at the Sefako Makgatho Presidential Guest House in Pretoria. He says the poor and people living in townships are now finding it exceptionally hard to afford the increased electricity price and tariffs:
# ActionSA’s member of Parliament, Lerato Ngobeni, says the party wants government to introduce legislation that will reserve specific sectors of the economy. Ngobeni says this will help empower local entrepreneurs and businesses, and boost local economies, ensuring that the wealth created circulates in communities. According to Ngobeni, it is high time that government deals with the proliferation of illegal foreign nationals dominating the spaza economy throughout the country:
# US president Joe Biden has condemned the assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump, calling on all Americans to denounce such “sick” violence. Biden called for unity after a gunman shot Trump in the ear, killed one member of the crowd and injured two others at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump had his fist in the air as he was rushed off the stage with blood on his face. The gunman, who has not yet been identified, was shot dead by Secret Service agents.
# And, rugby: Defending Currie Cup champions the Cheetahs scored a 37-17 victory over Western Province at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein yesterday. Hooker Vernon Paulo was responsible for two tries at the death. The halftime score was 10-all. The Cheetahs remain on top of the Currie Cup log. This afternoon, the Griffons welcome the Blue Bulls to Welkom. On Friday, the Lions demolished the Pumas 75-21 in Mbombela, while Griquas stunned the Sharks 34-31 in Kimberley.
