# International Relations and Co-operation minister Ronald Lamola says South Africa will continue to act within global institutions to protect the rights of Palestinians in Gaza and ensure the fair application of international law for all. South Africa has hauled Israel before the International Court of Justice, alleging the country is committing genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza. Lamola says the government will continue preparing and managing the ICJ case:
# The GOOD Party says the government of national unity Cabinet lekgotla this weekend should prioritise social security for the poor. The eleven political parties in the government of national unity will meet to discuss policy directions for the next five years. GOOD’s secretary-general, Brett Herron, says the ability of the government to create conditions for economic growth, while persuading struggling South Africans that it has their backs, will be a key determinant of the direction in which the country heads next:
# Intercape has won its fifth court battle, compelling the government and police to protect long-distance bus drivers and passengers from violence. The High Court in the Eastern Cape denied the Police and Transport ministers leave to appeal, ordering them to implement protective measures. Intercape CEO Johann Ferreira has welcomed the ruling and urges the new government of national unity to comply with the ruling and end resistance to safeguarding citizens. Intercape has faced ongoing attacks by taxi associations since 2015.
# Human Settlements minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has rejected the City of Cape Town’s request to devolve emergency funding to local government. This is amidst damaging disruptive rain and strong winds experienced in the Western Cape. Thirty-seven areas including Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Tafelsig, and Ocean View have been most affected. Kubayi, who led a delegation to the Cape Flats yesterday, says the national government took responsibility for the emergency funding from municipalities and the provincial government because of poor performance.
# Tennis: Italy’s Jasmine Paolini will face Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic in the women’s singles Wimbledon final tomorrow. Seventh-seeded Paolini battled back from a set down to beat Donna Vekic of Croatia, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6, in two hours and 51 minutes, the longest women’s singles semifinal in Wimbledon history. Krejcikova defeated 2022 champion Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Paolini, who is the first Italian woman to reach a Wimbledon final, says despite her recent success on tour she remains focused:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-99-cents and the euro at 19-rand-56-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-23-cents and Bitcoin trades at 57-thousand-23-dollars-7-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-409-dollars-7-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 85-dollars-62-cents a barrel.
