Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# Numsa calls on Ford SA workers to report for duty following a court interdict
# Cosatu calls on Parliament to show moral fortitude against delinquent MPs
# And, tennis: Sinner and Alcaraz take to the court in Wimbledon’s round of 16 today
# Metalworkers’ union Numsa has called on all Ford South Africa workers to return to work tomorrow after the Labour Court granted an interim interdict to temporarily block their strike. National spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola says the hearing to determine the interdict’s permanence will be heard on 28 August. She has called on the employer to look into the workers’ grievances:
# Cosatu has called on Parliament to show moral excellence and leadership in dealing with delinquent Members of Parliament. The union federaton raised concerns over the MK Party’s chief whip, impeached Western Cape Judge President John Hlophe, who was nominated to the Judicial Service Commission, and suspended DA MP Renaldo Gouws, who is accused of using racist hate speech. Cosatu’s Matthew Parks criticises Parliament’s leniency on misconduct, hate speech, and corruption, demanding stricter rules and accountability:
# Former British Home secretary Suella Braverman blames former prime minister Rishi Sunak for the Conservatives losing the election to Labour, saying he pursued an idiotic strategy that treated voters like mugs. Labour leader Keir Starmer was appointed new prime minister after his party recorded a landslide victory in Thursday’s vote. Braverman, who some say may be preparing for a leadership bid after Sunak’s resignation, says the Tories deserved to lose. She also ascribes the outcome to high taxes, high immigration and insane political correctness.
# Tennis: The two favourites in the men’s draw, world number one Jannik Sinner of Italy and third-seeded defending champion Carlos Alcaraz of Spain, are still on course for a meeting at the business end of Wimbledon. Sinner plays American Ben Shelton in the round of 16 today after beating Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic in the third round. Alcaraz was taken to five sets by a persistent American Frances Tiafoe, and will play Frenchman Ugo Humbert for a place in the quarterfinals.
# And finally, Bryoni Govender from South Africa has been crowned Miss Supranational Africa at the pageant in Poland. She was also named Miss Friendship. The overall competition was won by Harashta Haifa Zahra of Indonesia. Contestants from 68 countries and territories participated in the glittering event. Govender, a lawyer from Johannesburg, was the runner-up in the Miss South Africa competition last year, saying she had been working tirelessly to prepare herself mentally and physically for the pageant.
