BULLETIN 6 July 7 am
Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The IEC wants the Electoral Court to proceed with MK’s case despite its withdrawal
# Sunak says he resigned as Tory leader because he heard the electorate’s anger and disappointment
# And cricket: The Protea-women beat India by 12 runs in the first T20
# The Electoral Commission has asked the Electoral Court to go ahead with the MK Party’s court case against the outcome of the elections despite the party withdrawing the charges. It says MK made serious allegations, including accusing it of deliberate vote-rigging, and it’s imperative that the matter be heard. The IEC asks the court to at least confirm whether the accusations were made vexatiously and without just cause, and points out MK has also not offered to pay for the wasted litigation costs.
# COSATU has endorsed the strike by three-thousand NUMSA members at Ford South Africa, who are protesting the company’s refusal to share profits. NUMSA argues that Ford’s substantial profits should include profit-sharing bonuses for workers. Despite Ford SA’s attempt to block the strike through a Labour Court interdict, COSATU’s national spokesperson, Zanele Sabela, says it supports NUMSA’s call for fair compensation:
# Ster-Kinekor is set to diversify its cinemas nationwide, introducing e-gaming and promoting e-learning programmes. CEO Mark Sardi told eNCA plans also include ‘throwback cinema’ to showcase films from the 80s to the 2000s and to remind the audience of the cinema feel decades ago. He says these initiatives aim to enhance the cinema experience and help the struggling industry recover from the impact of Covid-19:
# Former British prime minister Rishi Sunak says he has decided to resign as leader of the Conservative Party because he heard the electorate’s anger and disappointment. The Tories suffered a massive election defeat to the Labour Party, who will take over after 14 years of Conservative rule. Labour’s leader, Keir Starmer, will be the new occupant of 10 Downing Street after being invited by King Charles to form a new government. Sunak will stay on as party leader until the Tory leadership race begins.
# And, cricket: The Proteas Women took a 1-nil lead in the three-match T20 series against India with a 12-run victory in the first match in Chennai. The South Africans posted a brilliant 189 for four thanks to 81 by Tazmin Brits and 57 by Marizanne Kapp. They then restricted the hostesses to 177 for four when Ayabonga Khaka, Chloe Tryon, Nadine de Klerk and Nonkululeko Mlaba all took one wicket. The second match will be played tomorrow, followed by the final game on Tuesday.
