Alcaraz defeated Novak Djokovic to win his first Wimbledon title last year and has since added a third Grand Slam title at the French Open. World number one Jannik Sinner, Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauf and Emma Raducanu are among the other stars involved on the first day of The Championship.
# Olympics: British sprint sensation Louie Hinchliffe secured a place at the Paris Games with a confident victory in the men’s 100-metre at the UK athletics championships. The 21-year-old, who is coached by American great Carl Lewis, has proved one of the breakout stars of the year with a best time of 9.95-seconds earlier. He clocked 10.18-seconds as he defied the rain to triumph in Manchester over the weekend. Hinchliffe has broken the ten-second barrier twice this year, although the first was wind-assisted.
Meanwhile, former Wallabies captain Michael Hooper has announced his retirement from international rugby after missing selection for the national Sevens team for the Olympics. The 32-year-old is one of the most decorated players in Australian history, having captained the Wallabies more than any other player leading the men in gold on 69 occasions. He made his Test debut in 2012 against Scotland, at the age of 20. Hooper says his incredible journey has been filled with unforgettable experiences, challenges, and memories.
# And finally, soccer: England and Spain are through to the quarterfinals of the European Championships in Germany. Goals from Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane gave England a two-one extra-time win over Slovakia in the last-16. Gareth Southgate’s side will face Switzerland in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Meanwhile, Spain thrashed Georgia four-one to set up a clash with hosts Germany. Southgate has praised the mentality of the England team:
