# The University of the Western Cape reaffirms its commitment to solidarity with the Palestinian people through a decisive motion endorsed by the university council, senate, convocation, and the Student Representative Council. The UWC’s spokesperson, Gasant Abarder, says this motion underscores the university’s unwavering support for justice, human rights and rebuilding Palestinian higher education. Abarder says the university will fully disengage from Israeli academic institutions:
Meanwhile, at least six people, including four children, have been killed and several others are wounded following overnight Israeli military strikes on residential homes in Gaza City. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric says the new Israeli ground offensive in the Shujayea neighbourhood forced at least 60-thousand residents to flee. She adds Israel’s military operations in the al-Mawasi area of southern Gaza resulted in many casualties and displaced around five-thousand people. Casualties were also reported in an attack on central Gaza’s Maghazi refugee camp.
# Back home: The KwaDukuza Regional Court in KwaZulu-Natal has sentenced a 47-year-old woman to 18 years direct imprisonment for the murder of her four-year-old daughter. The National Prosecuting Authority’s spokesperson, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, says in April 2022, while the little girl was watching TV afrer breakfast, the woman was planning to take her own life. She felt she couldn’t leave her daughter behind:
# The Giyani Specialised Commercial Crimes Court has sentenced Zimbabwean national Tauzeni Piason to a one-million-rand fine or five-years imprisonment for possession of illicit cigarettes. Additionally, he was fined five-thousand-rand or six-months imprisonment for illegal immigration. NPA Limpopo regional spokesperson, Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, said the court highlighted the economic impact of such offenses:
# And, soccer: The knockout stages of Euro 2024 kicks off today. In the first group of 16 match, Italy face Switzerland in Berlin. The Italians are the favourites to reach the quarterfinals. The hosts Germany hope to keep the excitement of the tournament alive by beating Denmark tonight in Dortmund. Tomorrow one of the favourites, England face Slovakia in Gelsenkirchen. In the last match of the weekend Spain take on minnows Georgia in Cologne.
