# We start with Cricket: India has emphatically claimed a place in the T20 World Cup final against South Africa in Barbados on Saturday with a 68-run victory against England in Georgetown, Guyana. Indian captain Rohit Sharma led his team to a highly competitive total of 171 for seven after being asked to bat first. England’s demise was quick and they were all out for just 103 in 16 overs and four balls. South Africa beat Afghanistan by nine wickets in the first semifinal on Thursday morning. The Proteas bowled Afghanistan out for just 56 in 11 overs and 5 balls and reached 60-1 in 8 overs and 5 balls. The final will be played in Bridgetown, Barbados, on Saturday beginning at 4:30pm SA time.
# Rugby: The 14th edition of the World Rugby U20 Championships returns to the Mother City for the second consecutive year from tomorrow until 19 July. The City of Cape Town’s mayoral committee member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says the tournament sees the world’s 12 best nations competing over five match days at the Athlone Stadium, Cape Town Stadium and Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch:
# Motorsport: Triple world champion Max Verstappen finally confirmed he would be racing for Red Bull next season after previous answers in this regard fell short of absolute commitment. Mercedes have been making overtures to the 26-year-old Dutchman despite the fact he has a contract with Red Bull until the end of 2028 and his current car has won seven of ten races this season. At a pre-Austrian Grand Prix news conference Verstappen said he is working with the Red Bull team and focusing on next year to try and be competitive again.
Cycling: The International Cycling Union is investigating the proposed use by the team of defending Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard, of a ‘control room’. The room will enable team owners Visma-Lease a Bike to capture live data would help their riders in this year’s race. The UCI is currently carrying out verifications to ensure that the set-up put in place is compliant with the union’s regulatory framework. The Dutch outfit said the room will support the coaches in the car and help them make the best possible tactical decisions faster. The Tour starts from Florence on Saturday.
# And finally, Canoeing: Thirteen-time race winner Hank McGregor confirmed this week he will not be taking part in the 2024 Berg River Canoe Marathon, leaving the four-day event from Paarl to Velddrif wide open for a mix of young and older contestants all hoping to get onto the podium on 6 July. The Berg starts on Wednesday in Paarl and paddlers face an opening day of 62-kilometre to Zonquasdrift. Day Two goes from Zonquasdrift to Bridgetown, with the Queen Stage, a brutal grind to Zoutkloof. Wind and tides can make the 57-kilometre to Velddrif a gruelling final stage.
