# The World Economic Forum’s 2024 report on energy transition has indicated progress but highlighted lost momentum amid global uncertainty. The Energy Transition Index, benchmarking 120 countries, shows notable advancements in energy efficiency and clean energy adoption. However, rising energy prices have hindered momentum, affecting energy equity. Geopolitical risks continue to challenge energy security.
# Residents of Biesiesvlei in North West have criticised the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment for allegedly delaying action on the environmental damage caused by a fire at the local Waste Tyre Depot. The blaze, triggered by veld fires, occurred months after report of residents’ concerns about environmental degradation and fire risks from the tyre stockpiles. The Lichtenburg Waste Tyre Depot in Biesiesvlei is one of 14 depots managed by the Department’s Waste Management Bureau.
# And finally: The University of Witwatersrand researchers says studies show climate change carries greater risks for unborn babies than previously thought, including worsening health and wellbeing in later life. Climate change is one of the greatest public health threats humanity has ever faced. Professor Matthew Chersich and research clinician Darshnika Lakhoo proposed the effects of heat in pregnancy on the unborn baby likely occur through multiple pathways, including worsening the health of the mother through problems like pre-eclampsia and diabetes, and increasing the risk of premature birth and other problems at the time of birth.
