# Saftu criticises the presence of apartheid sympathisers in Parliament, citing recent remarks by the DA’s MP Renaldo Gouws. The union federation condemns racist statements and supports the South African Human Rights Commission’s case against Gouws, to address hate speech. Saftu’s Mogoshadi Maserumule urges Parliament to suspend Gouws to uphold constitutional values and eliminate racism in post-apartheid South Africa:
Meanwhile, the African Transformation Movement claims there will be policy confusion in the government of national unity. ATM leader Vuyo Zungula argues that the GNU lacks principled formation. Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, Zungula warned that parties in the GNU might be forced to change their stance on policies they previously opposed, including the Phala Phala farm scandal and the National Health Insurance:
# The National Health Laboratory Service had a security breach over the weekend resulting in servers and data storage being inaccessible and data, including some backups, being deleted. It also resulted in the laboratory’s website being down. CEO professor Koleka Mlisana said an investigation is underway to determine the extent of the compromise. Mlisana said the entity would manually process all the diagnostic samples received by its laboratories and results would be communicated telephonically if urgent. The rest would be manually printed and distributed to healthcare facilities and clinicians.
# A game farm worker was mauled to death by a lioness while fixing a fence and installing a gate on Sunday. Free State police spokesperson Lorraine Earle said the 43-year-old victim was attacked after his supervisor warned him too late. The worker died from multiple bite marks, and the lioness was euthanised by the SPCA. Earle says the Glen police have opened an inquest case for further investigation.
# Britain’s princess Anne has sustained minor injuries and a concussion following an incident on the Gatcombe Park estate. Buckingham Palace says the 73-year-old Princess Royal is expected to make a full and swift recovery but will remain in hospital until her medical team advises otherwise. The cause of her injury is unconfirmed, but the BBC says it is believed to be consistent with potential impact from a horse’s head or legs. Anne’s engagements for the week have been postponed.
# Cricket: Rohit Sharma led from the front with a blistering 92 as India beat Australia by 24 runs in St Lucia on Monday to seal their place in the semifinals of the T20 World Cup. Australia eventually finished their reply on 181 for seven, with left-arm quick Arshdeep Singh taking 3-37. India will now face defending champions England in Thursday’s semifinal in Guyana.
