# Tshwane mayor Cilliers Brink says the city has the largest, fully accredited artisan training programme in the country which, to date, has trained over four-thousand young people. Tshwane welcomed a new group of 114 young people to the city’s three-year accredited artisan skills training programme at the Tshwane Leadership and Management Academy. Brink says the selected group ranges between 20 to 25 years of age, making this a real youth empowerment programme:
Meanwhile, Brink in partnership with Mpathy Clinics, will officially be launching the Mpathy Private Healthcare Clinic in Pretoria North today. In 2023, Mpathy Clinics, a subsidiary of Rhiza Babuyile, approached the city’s Department of Health for a collaboration to open a private clinic that bridges the healthcare gap and caters for underserved communities. The City facilitated the donation of a site from the private sector for Mpathy to construct its fifth clinic to deliver essential medical services to communities by providing quality, dignified healthcare at low fees of up to 300-rand.
# The University of the Free State’s Food Innovation Laboratory has introduced a new line of affordable, protein-rich soy-based dairy alternatives. The project aims to produce a range of economically feasible, high-protein snacks and dairy alternatives using soybeans. Since the lab’s inception in early 2023, it has developed a variety of high-protein plant-based products, including soya sausages and mince. They have also introduced healthy snack options such as roasted soya nuts, which serve as high-protein alternatives to peanuts.
# The 26th edition of Africa’s premier documentary film festival, Encounters, has kicked off in Cape Town to showcase top productions. The South African documentary “Mother City,” directed by Miki Redelinghuys and Pearlie Joubert, opened the festival yesterday. The event features a diverse lineup of local and international films and it is set to run until 30 June in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Encounters was founded in 1999, and has become a leading creative documentary festival on the continent.
# And finally: Stellenbosch University has introduced the Mariner 4.0 app, a revolutionary system designed to help seafarers combat seasickness. The system monitors motion sickness in real time, reducing the incidence and severity of symptoms. The university’s researcher Nicole Taylor says the app was used aboard the SA Agulhas two, collects data on individual experiences, providing valuable insights for voyage planning and ship design:
