# EFF leader Julius Malema has accused AfriForum of opening the firearm case against him for political gain. He is accused of brandished a firearm during the party’s 5th birthday celebration in Mdantsane in 2018. During cross-examination in the East London Regional Court, Malema accused the National Prosecuting Authority of being influenced. He challenged AfriForum to put him on trial themselves, asserting no prima facie case exists:
Meanwhile, AfriForum insists no politician is above the law. AfriForum’s Community Safety spokesperson Jacques Broodryk criticises Malema’s shifting defense and highlights expert opinions disputing the claims of using blanks or a toy gun. He emphasises Snyman’s previous misconduct with firearms, calling for justice to take its course:
# The South African Human Rights Commission is taking DA Member of Parliament Renaldo Gouws to the Equality Court in Gqeberha for alleged hate speech and racist utterances from a 2010 YouTube video. In the video, Gouws allegedly called for the killing of black people using extremely offensive language. According to the commission’s Wisani Baloyi, following complaints and assessment, the commission found the statements to constitute hate speech under the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act:
# Golf: Charlie Woods, the son of 15-time major champion Tiger Woods, has qualified for the US Junior Amateur championship. He posted a 1-under 71, finishing first at a qualifying event at Eagle Trace Golf Club in Coral Springs, Florida. Charlie was one of four golfers to secure a spot in the US Junior Amateur. He follows in his dad’s footsteps. Tiger won the same tournament in 1991, 1992 and 1993. The only three-time champion of the event, Tiger won it at 15 years old, Charlie’s current age.
# Financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-8-cents and the euro at 19-rand-39-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-95-cents and Bitcoin trades at 66-thousand-60-dollars-60-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-339-dollars-5-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 85-dollars-35-cents a barrel.
# And finally: The World Health Organisation is observing World Refugee Day 2024 under the theme ‘Solidarity with Refugees.’ WHO emphasises building inclusive health systems and ensuring equitable care for refugees. By mid-2023, over 110-million individuals were forcibly displaced, with 40-percent being children. WHO celebrates refugee resilience and contributions to health systems, advocating for their health rights and universal access to quality care for all, regardless of migratory status.
