# We start off with cricket: Kolkata Knight Riders recorded an emphatic eight-wicket victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad to claim their third Indian Premier League title. Andre Russell took three wickets as Sunrisers were bowled out for 113, the lowest total in an IPL final. In reply, captain Shreyas Iyer starred with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 52 as Kolkata chased down the target within 11 overs. Iyer says the team was impressive throughout the tournament:
Meanwhile, the West Indies defeated South Africa by eight wickets in the third and final T20 to complete a three-nil sweep of the series in Jamaica. Obed McCoy took three wickets as the Windies restricted the Proteas to 163 for seven, with Rassie van der Dussen scoring a half-century. In reply, Johnson Charles scored 69 as the Windies completed their chase with 37 balls to spare. South Africa has won just two of their last eleven completed matches since the last T20 World Cup.
# Motorsport: Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc won his home race, the Monaco Grand Prix. He held off an early challenge from McLaren’s Oscar Piastri to take his first win since July 2022, as his teammate Carlos Sainz took third. McLaren’s Lando Norris finished fourth and Mercedes’ George Russell fifth. Reigning world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull had to settle for sixth, and sees his championship lead over Leclerc reduced to 31 points. Leclerc says winning at home is extra special:
# Tennis: Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland are through to the second round of the French Open. Alcaraz defeated American lucky loser JJ Wolf, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1. 2015 champion Wawrinka knocked out Britain’s Andy Murray, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. In the women’s draw, four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka of Japan beat Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti 6-1, 4-6, 7-5, while Swiss player Viktorija Golubic knocked out former champion Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic in straight sets.
Meanwhile, fourteen-time champion Rafael Nadal says he relishes facing Germany’s Alexander Zverev in the first round today. The Spaniard has only played four tournaments since January last year after suffering a hip injury and then a muscle tear. This has left him unseeded for the second Grand Slam of the year. Nadal says he expected to get a tough opponent in the opening round:
