Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We kick off with rugby: The Springboks will kick off their second in-person alignment camp in Cape Town today – a month before their opening Test of the season against Wales in London on 22 June. A group of 38 players are assembling for the two-day camp. Players from the Sharks, who are playing in the Challenge Cup final against Gloucester on Friday, have been excused from this week’s camp. The camp follows a two-day coaches’ strategic session hosted last weekend where the building blocks for the camp were put in place.
Meanwhile, the Boks and the Stormers will be without the services of utility back Damian Willemse for about four months. He injured his finger ligaments during the victory over Connacht, which secured the Stormers’ place in the United Rugby Championship playoffs. He is expected to undergo surgery tomorrow. Willemse will miss the rest of the URC season as well as the Springboks’ June and July Tests and the Rugby Championship.
# Cricket: Kolkata Knight Riders made sure of their place in Sunday’s final of the Indian Premier League with an eight-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the first qualifier. Venkatesh and Shreyas Iyer both scored unbeaten half-centuries for the winning team after Australian left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc picked up three wickets to help dismiss Sunrisers for just 159. Kolkata reached the target in the 14th over, with just two wickets down. Starc was happy with the performance:
# Golf: Louisville police say they will investigate if procedures were followed in the arrest of world number one Scottie Scheffler at the PGA Championship. The American was arrested last week Friday after trying to drive into Valhalla Golf Club in heavy traffic. The 27-year-old is facing charges of second-degree assault, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an official. Scheffler has denied all charges. Louisville’s chief of police Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel says any policy violations will be appropriately addressed.
# And finally, soccer: Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has left his role by mutual consent after just one season. The 52-year-old Argentinian led the Blues to the Carabao Cup final and FA Cup semifinals, and finished sixth in the Premier League. Pochettino says the club is now well-positioned to keep moving forward in the Premier League and Europe in the years to come. Ipswich’s Kieran McKenna, Leicester’s Enzo Maresca, and Stuttgart’s Sebastian Hoeness are on the list of possible replacements.
