# ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa has reiterated that he is confident that his party will secure the majority in the general elections next week. Polls suggest the ruling party could get around 45-percent of the vote, which would mean forming a coalition to secure a majority. The president was on a campaign trail in Bokamoso in the North West. Ramaphosa says no one is going to destroy the ANC, it is the home for all South Africans:
Meanwhile, the police in Limpopo are investigating an additional four cases of attempted murder, malicious damage to properties, and two counts of infringement of the Electoral Act. This is concerning violence that erupted between EFF and ANC supporters during campaigning at Juju Valley in Seshego on Sunday. The incident resulted in a nine-year-old bystander and a 25-year-old man sustaining gunshot wounds. Police spokesperson, Hlulani Mashaba, says the minor is still in the hospital:
# The Gauteng Care Crisis Committee will file an urgent application against the Gauteng Department of Social Development in the High Court in Johannesburg. The committee seeks for the department to finalise Service Level Agreements and pay NPOs by 31 May. Additionally, they demand a report detailing funded organisations and rejected applications with reasons by the same date. This aims to ensure transparency and accountability in the department’s decision-making processes.
# The wife of Hollywood actor George Clooney was part of a panel of international legal experts who recommended the International Criminal Court apply for arrest warrants for Israeli and Hamas leaders. Human rights lawyer Amal Clooney assisted with evaluating evidence of suspected war crimes and crimes against humanity. Among the leaders, the ICC’s chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, wants arrested are Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and three Hamas leaders. Clooney says she believes in the rule of law and the need to protect civilian lives.
# Rugby: The Springboks will kick off their second in-person alignment camp in Cape Town today – a month before their opening Test of the season against Wales in London on 22 June. A group of 38 players are assembling for the two-day camp. Players from the Sharks, who are playing in the Challenge Cup final against Gloucester on Friday, have been excused from this week’s camp. The camp follows a two-day coaches’ strategic session hosted last weekend where the building blocks for the camp were put in place.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-6-cents and the euro at 19-rand-62-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-97-cents and Bitcoin trades at 70-thousand-11-dollars-37-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-422-dollars-80-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 82-dollars-37-cents a barrel.
# And Finally: Tributes are pouring in for former DA federal council chairperson, James Selfe, who died yesterday afternoon following a lengthy illness. The 68-year-old served in the party for almost two decades before retiring in 2019 over poor health. DA leader John Steenhuisen says Selfe dedicated his life to the liberation of citizens. ActionSA president Herman Mashaba says he was a true patriot and a dedicated public servant.
