# The documentary South Africa Celebrates 30 Years of Freedom made its world premiere at the opening ceremony of the 77th Cannes International Film Festival in France. Produced by Moments Entertainment and the Thabo Mbeki Foundation, the documentary features legendary author, director and playwright, John Kani, and singer-songwriter and humanitarian, Yvonne Chaka Chaka. Filmmaker, Firdoze Bulbulia, told News24 the documentary presents never-before-seen footage that tells the story of building a new South Africa.
# The University of the Free State’s Department of Ophthalmology has collaborated with ORBIS, an international non-profit organisation dedicated to combating avoidable blindness. It’s the first university department in the region to collaborate with the organisation. The institution’s department head, professor Wayne Marais, has also been selected for ORBIS’s esteemed international teaching team. The university says Marais will play a pivotal role in enhancing ORBIS’s international training platform, contributing significantly to the goal of bolstering human resources for eye health and improving education in ophthalmology.
# As winter approaches and homelessness rises in South Africa, U-turn Homeless Ministries and Independent Media have launched a campaign dubbed A Night on the Streets. With the aim of raising one-million-rand, South Africans are urged to contribute and spend this coming Saturday experiencing solidarity with the homeless by sleeping outdoors. U-turn’s Valerie Govender says they are seeking to deepen awareness of homelessness and underscore that it is often not a matter of choice.
# Entries for the eighth annual African Property Investment Awards are now open and for the first time entries from South Africa will be accepted. The awards are open to developers, professional teams, consultants, suppliers, and property owners across Africa. African Property Investment’s Murray Anderson-Ogle says the awards are not only about recognising the best projects and individuals in the African real estate industry, but also celebrating the innovation, dedication, and expertise that drive the industry forward. Entries close on the first of July.
# And finally: Eight watches belonging to Formula One icon Michael Schumacher sold for around 74-million-rand at an auction in Geneva, Switzerland. The top piece in the sale was a watch given to the German racing superstar by former Ferrari CEO Jean Todt as a Christmas present in 2004. Schumacher, who was involved in a skiing accident in 2013, a year after he retired from the sport, shares the record for seven F1 titles with British driver Lewis Hamilton.
