# Western Cape MEC of Finance and Economic Opportunities, Mireille Wenger, says the province continues to shine as a destination in high demand. Tourist arrivals to Cape Town by air recorded a 16-percent year-on-year increase between January and March this year, reaching 336-thousand-268 visitors. The UK was the top overseas air market to Cape Town in the first quarter of this year, followed by Germany and the USA. Wenger says tourism is a cornerstone of the province’s strategic economic initiative Growth for Jobs:
# Eskom Expo says a group of six outstanding young scientists from South Africa are showcasing their brilliance at the world’s largest pre-college science, technology, engineering and mathematics competition in Los Angeles, California. These exceptional young people have the opportunity to represent the country at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair until Friday. Alutha Botha, Likitha Chundru, Keamogetse Monna, Zaahid Sader, Nicholas Zhang and Matthew Collier-Reed are participating following their successful entries in the Eskom Expo International Science Fair, held in October last year.
# The University of Pretoria says Nigerian PhD graduate Victory Sumanu is now the proud holder of a doctorate in Veterinary Physiology. Her success is made all the sweeter when considering the uphill battle she faced on her academic journey. She never applied for veterinary science, but Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria recommended the course. Doctor Sumanu was meant to commence her PhD studies in 2020, but could not come to South Africa due to Covid-19 restrictions until January 2021.
# Deputy minister of Health, Sibongiseni Dhlomo, is continuing the department’s commemoration of International Nurses Day in the Western Cape today. The Hospital Association of South Africa predicts that by 2030, the demand for nurses in South Africa will increase by up to 340-thousand. The department’s spokesperson, Foster Mohale, says the Western Cape event today forms part of countrywide activities to honour nurses and raise awareness of the challenges they face:
# And finally: Shows including BBC One’s Happy Valley, The Sixth Commandment and Netflix’s Top Boy were the big winners at this year’s BAFTA TV Awards in London. Sarah Lancashire won Best Actress for her performance in the final series of Happy Valley, while Best Actor went to Timothy Spall for The Sixth Commandment. The Best Drama Series went to Toy Boy. Strictly Come Dancing won Best Entertainment Programme, while Squid Game: The Challenge won Best Reality.
